Spring

Watercolour painting is harder than it looks. We practised painting spring images inspired by David Hockney's Arrival of Spring in Woldgate series.

We finished our study of forces by investigating simple machines. We made pulleys to see how they made it easier to lift an object, changing the direction of the effort.

In science, we experimented with different shapes to see which moved slowest through water (water resistance, friction). We timed the drops and worked out the average of the results.

We had a wonderful day exploring the National Gallery and working out the stories depicted in the paintings. We practised sketching in front of Stubbs' Whistlejacket and Van Gogh's paintings.

We presented this week's Celebration of the Word to the whole school and our parents/carers. Our theme was the Transfiguration of Our Lord.

For Emerald Day this year, we practised our baking skills making rock cakes. We measured out the ingredients and rubbed in the flour and butter. The results were delicious!

Well done to everyone for your excellent rendition of T.S. Eliot's Macavity: The Mystery Cat in our school Poetry Assembly.

Year 5 have once again taken part in The Economist's Topical Talk Festival. Topics so far have included AI and Sustainability; Elon Musk; What's Next for Syria? and Women in Space.

We loved designing and making stage sets for scenes from The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes. We used card, paper, paint, clay, bubblewrap and cloth.

In science, we are investigating forces. We used force meters to measure how friction affects the amount of force needed to move an object.

We made doves to symbolise hope at the beginning our the Holy Father's Jubilee Year of Hope 2025.
