Spring
Spring Term 1
We finished off last term with Forest School. The children had the most amazing day in the great outdoors, exploring, creating and adventuring.
This term we are Investigating addition and subtraction in Year 1. We used tangible objects such as fruit or counters to tell an addition story before progressing to abstract number problems. We practiced writing the same equation in a number of ways so that the children will feel confident no matter which way a question is framed.
In English we are delving into 'journey' stories. We have read many wondering tales and are working towards writing our very own journey adventure!
Our Science topic this term is Materials. We have been looking at a range of materials including plastic, wood, stone, glass, metal and fabric, and discussing their properties. This topic is linked to our history topic of Toys, looking at the differences between old and new toys. The children have explored a range of toys and the materials they are made from, as well as talking about why certain material choices would have been made. We also had a close look at absorbency, conducting a fair test to see which materials would be best to clear up a spill.
Spring Term 2
We had a wonderful and exciting Term! Some notable experiences have been the school trip to the Amelia Scott, our second forest school and our Mothers Day liturgy and morning tea.
The children learnt so much about the United Kingdom in our Geography unit and are able to name the four countries, capital cities, national flowers and can even plot the four countries on a map of the UK! This knowledge spread over to our writing unit where the children learnt about information texts. Each child produced an information packed piece of writing on the country of their choosing from the United Kingdom!
In Maths the children have been exploring addition and subtraction facts, recognising patterns such as consecutive numbers, odds and evens, doubling and halving and using inverse equations.
