Summer

Forest School: we had a wonderful day making a fire, playing games, sketching, exploring our surroundings, creating a painted tile using natural objects to make an imprint; and enjoying some delicious popcorn!

English- The children created a scene from the story Fantastic Mr Fox where the foxes are in their den and they hear the farmer's shovel breaking into their den. The children then acted the next scene modelling how the farmers could defeat their enemy. This linked with our work on defeating the monster tales.

Art Exhibition Project- The children explored the work of the artist Ted Harrison to create their own piece of artwork for the whole school exhibition. The children used tints and tones to create their landscape.

Meadow Trip: Using an identification sheet, we observed the many different types of trees, flowers and other natural objects in this beautiful open space (as well as rolling down the hill!). We then sat in the sunshine to listen to our class reader "The Girl Who Talked to Trees" by Natasha Farrant.

Art: using natural objects as our focus, we explored some shells and used charcoal to shade the darker and light areas on the shells. We also thought about whether we were using straight or curved lines.

Maths: the children have been using coins to help them to count up pounds and pence, to make totals, to compare amounts and to solve reasoning questions.

Geography: we discussed how different parts of the world have different climates, as well as the polar and arid regions.

Computing and Music: we have started using Chrome Music Lab to explore rhythm and pattern using different instruments to match an animal's movement.

Science: we discussed all the different ways that seeds can be “dispersed” such as by being blown away (dandelion seeds); eaten (by animals and then deposited on the ground); exploding open (violas); floating down a river (coconut seeds); sticking to animals (sandburs); and falling to the ground (sycamore seeds). Afterwards, we had fun creating our own sycamore seeds, which slowly floated down to the ground like twirling helicopters because of their wings, which spin and turn in the wind.

Maths: initially we used Dienes to practically solve 2-digit subtraction calculations and then we progressed to using a pictorial representation of tens and ones. This helped us when crossing the 10s boundary!

PE: we practised our sprinting technique to help us to run more quickly!
