Term 1 - 'All About Me'
Welly Walk
Our whole school book this term is ‘Where My Wellies Take Me’ by Michael and Clare Morpurgo, so in Nursery we decided to go on a walk to see where our wellies would take us. As we walked, we thought about our five senses and discussed all the things we could see, hear, smell and feel and then used coloured tissue paper to create a collage of a pair of wellies.
Improving our independence
We have been so impressed with how quickly the children have developed their independence at snack time. Each day, two children are chosen to be ‘Helping Hands’ and have a variety of jobs, including handing out the plates and cups at snack time. We say grace together then the children pour their own milk or water. The children have been tenacious in their attempts at peeling their satsumas, strengthening their finger muscles! At the end of snack time the children load the dishwasher.
Self-Portraits
For our ‘All About Me’ topic, the children have been painting their self-portraits. They started by looking carefully in a mirror, and identifying where all their features were on their face. They observed their eye colour, hair colour and skin colour and we discussed the similarities and differences between ourselves and our friends.
Outside learning
Accessing learning outside is a fundamental part of the Early Years Curriculum. Every day the children have been using the bikes on the big playground to develop those all-important gross motor skills, and our mud kitchen and sand and water trays have been used for sensory exploration and imaginative play.
Nature Detectives
It has been wonderful to notice the children's great fascination for minibeasts and they have really been enjoying seeing what insects can be found in our mud kitchen area. As well as spotting a grasshopper and some ladybirds on the leaves, we found some woodlice and several worms living under the tree stumps. The children were keen to hold them gently and we discussed how we needed to look after nature and how important insects are. After spending time looking at them and observing how they move, we carefully put them back where we found them. Inspired by their findings, they requested the story ‘Superworm’ by Julia Donaldson, which we were able to enjoy outside in the Autumn sunshine.
