Term 2 - Christmas
The Nativity Story
Over the past couple of weeks we have shared lots of books that tell the Nativity story. It has been wonderful to see the children making connections with our Nativity production and recognising the characters from the songs they have been learning. They have been retelling the story using small world figures, using stencils to draw their own stable scenes, making stars of Bethlehem and nativity characters out of play dough, practising their scissor skills making Nativity scenes, and recognising numerals, subitising and ordering numbers to 5 with angels.
Christmas Traditions
With Christmas drawing ever nearer, we have been discussing why we celebrate Christmas and the children were able to tell us it is Jesus’ birthday! We have been learning about traditions that surround Christmas such as a Christmas tree and shared the story of ‘The Christmas Pine’ by Julia Donaldson, about the tree in Trafalgar Square. The children enjoyed decorating our mini class Christmas trees and focused on their fine motor skills, cutting and sticking to make paper chains to decorate the classroom.
Festive Activities
We have been completely swept up in the Christmas spirit in Nursery and our classroom has been a hive of festive activities. We have been making cards for friends and family, ordering lengths of paper to make Christmas trees, painting crowns for our special lunch on Wednesday, designing our own baubles, using our fine motor skills to decorate Christmas wreaths with pom poms, hand printing reindeer decorations and looking at repeating patterns with presents! The children have most definitely earnt a good rest over the holidays! Before enjoying our Christmas lunch together, we joined the rest of the school in the hand made Christmas hat parade and the children proudly showed off their bejewelled crowns as we did a lap around the playground. An extra special end to the term was a special visit from Father Christmas himself! It was so magical to see all the children’s faces light up and he talked to us about his reindeer and gave all the children a special gift and a ‘nice list’ certificate.
